Welcome to the female organs and menstrual cycle homepage

All parts of the female reproductive system are internal. Ovaries, which produce eggs, are located at about hip level. In addition to eggs, the ovaries also produce a hormone called estrogen. Estrogen begins the maturation of the eggs and triggers the broadening of hips.

The Fallopian tube is not directly connected to the ovary, but the egg travels through it to the uterus. For this reason, the Fallopian tube is also called the oviduct. The hollow, muscular organ called the uterus or womb, is located at the end of oviduct. The uterus is where the early development of the baby takes place.

The cervix is located at the lower end of the uterus. The cervix opens into the wider channel called the vagina. This is also known as the birth canal because the child passes through it during birth.

The menstrual cycle is the monthly process of change that occurs in the female reproductive system. The average womans menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days. During this time, the lining of the uterus builds up and a mature egg is released into the Fallopian tubes during a process called ovulation. The egg and sperm meet in the fallopian tubes, and fertilization may occur. Once a fertilized egg reaches the lining of the uterus, it attaches itself and develops into a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus and the egg breakdown and pass out through the vagina. This is called menstruation.
